Delicious Charlton Cat Cakes

Coffee and Cakes

Caroline's Café trail

By Bike

The Charlton Cat, Charlton St. Peter

A delightful licensed tea room, just a mile past Rushall on the way to Devizes.  Originally a roadside village pub, the Charlton Cat is a wonderful place to relax over morning coffee, lunch, tea or weekend brunch.  There's plenty of space, so it's a great place if there are lots of you.

As well as the dining room and a private room for functions, there are sofas in front of an open fire or you can sit outside on the terrace when it's warm and sunny.  Classy, elegant, with superb cakes, and the best Welsh Rarebit this side of the Severn Bridge.  About 7 miles, mainly on A-roads... allow 45 minutes by bike (but beware - the roads are not cycle friendly).  We'd recommend 10-15 minutes by car.

Tea Inc., Devizes

It's a fair trek by bike to Devizes, either by road or canal towpath, so  you could also take the car or bus, and make a day of it.  Either way, by time you've looked around the town and market, find the Ginnel, and discover the magic Tea Inc. - a charming boutique with a huge choice of teas and coffees from everywhere and beyond, set in a 300-year-old slightly crooked building just off the Market Place.

Visit the Shoppe if you want to look beyond the teabag and to (re)discover loose leaf tea, served with a smile.  There are also cakes and scones to enjoy with all the teas, and homemade light lunches prepared in the pocket-size kitchen.  11 pretty miles by road or canal.

Tea Inc. also has a shop in Marlborough... Caroline will investigate!!

Honeystreet Mill Café

A charming rustic café next to the Kennet & Avon Canal at Honeystreet, half way to Devizes.  Perhaps a bit far to walk, but there are two lovely road routes and a canal towpath to get you there by bike.  Home cooked breakfasts, light lunches, teas and drinks are all on offer from 9 'til 5, including a pleasing selection of wines, bottled beers and ciders.  Great for fruit smoothies too.  There's a spectacular display of home-made gateaux to fuel you on your way back, but before you go, have a look around the neighbouring India Shop.  This is Crop Circle Central, so look out for the exhibition too.

Woodborough Garden Centre

The Strawberry Fields Tea Room and Bistro is open from 9.00 - 4.30, and offers good breakfasts, lunches and teas, with wines and bottle beers and ciders too.  Great for an easy lunch or snack while you're looking around the boutique-style garden centre and shop.  There's also a range of other interesting shops and boutiques in the yard outside.

Gastro Nick's,  Collingbourne Ducis

Not many people would normally head to a small trading estate up a small village lane for a great deli, but that's where this gem is to be found.  Just off the A338 at Collingbourne Ducis, south of Burbage, this is the place to buy superb cheeses, charcuterie, wines and spirits, fresh veg and much more.  Fresh fish is delivered direct from Cornwall on Thursdays, and wood-fired pizzas (optional cook-your-own) are available on Friday.  While you're there, you can also sit outside for coffee and light lunches.  Very helpful and friendly.

If you want your stay at Totteridge to be a gourmet experience, Gastro Nick's is the place to go.

7 miles by main road.  Good alternative routes for cycling.

This page is very new and is under development, and is likely to remain so while we keep up our 'market research'! - this is just the beginning and there is more to come!

Let us know if you come across a local gem too!
